Muscle Of The Week...Adductor Brevis

Hi There

These last weeks we have started our journey learning the muscles. This is a HUGE under taking. There are +- 600 muscles in the body... So we will be at this for a while... We are also doing this alphabetically to follow logically .Let us do a quick review on what we have learnt these past weeks.
Right off the bat we have learnt some terminology to understand movement patterns and some functions of the muscles.

Terminology

From last week we also learnt why  professionals need a language that can be understood internationally. It makes sense no matter where you are a doctor needs to be able to understand the body and communicate what he has done to the body and where it has been done.  I mean can you think of what might go wrong it there is a language barrier between a surgeon and the diagnosis doctor? You might lose a kidney or undergo a wrong procedure. Also Latin is a "dead" language.Meaning it does not change and evolve because we do not use it anymore as a means to communicate. But it still is the bases of a lot of languages and as you've now seen medical terminology.  Piont is; it doesn't change so everyone right around the world studying the body is on the same page irrespective of their language

Abduction/ Abduct :The smart way to clarify any movement that is done away from the mid line of the body or extremity. Easy way to remember is that aliens abduct humans FROM earth TO space. So the movement we are carrying out moves away FROM the midline.I also think of a Jumping Jack to explain this movement. As we jump out with out legs and swing arm open and over we are abducting the legs and arms.

Proximal means nearest point the joint

Distal means furthers point from the joint

Brevis means small

Longus means...Long

Adding to our list...

Inferior means below. So it would always refer to the lower part of the bone/underside of the bone/muscle/part.

Flexion means to bend around a joint that decreases the angle between the bones at the joint

Muscles we have done

*Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Foot
*Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Hand
*Abductor Hallucis
*Abductor Pollicis Brevis
*Abductor Pollicis Longus

All the above muscles main function is Abduction.

Now on to this week's Muscle

Adductor Brevis

Origin: Inferior Pubic Ramus (lower/under part of the Pelvis)
Insertion: Linea aspera (loosely explained ridge on the Femur)

The function of Adductor Brevis:
Adduction of the thigh
Flexion of the thigh
Stabilisation of the pelvis.
External rotation of the thigh .

Most common injuries
Groin strains, which occurs mostly in young athletes.Tha main causes are because of not stretching the adductor group. Weakness in these muscles, and the nature of force movinging through this muscle group especially when changing directions.

Prevention/Prehab
Stretch and strengthen!!!

Even if the main function of the muscle is adduction, not much adduction or abduction occurs, because of our movement patterns. If we do not intentionally move this muscle group pretty much no movement takes place naturally because of our lifestyles. This is why it is weak and sometimes stiff. Walking/Running is a linear movement that overrules a multi- directional joint.

Please follow the links to see my sources. I want to give credit to all of them.

Keep Moving until next time👋
