Moving More Than Just The Body. Soul Exercise

Image
Hi There  Do you ever experience the sense that physically you are on top of your game but the rest of our being is just not "there". We usually lose motivation when we feel this way. We usually give up after this. This is where I want to encourage to exercise your soul and mind with your body! This is also why I say that we need to remember we are more than the sum of our parts!  As a Sport Scientist, I remember this when I test my athletes and results are not what was expected, but I see them train every day. As a Personal Trainer, I remember this when clients seem unmotivated and struggle with a programme I know they can master, so we adapt and start talking their mood through :exercising the soul and mind.As I Pilates Instructor, I remember this when my clients seem frustrated and  we just focus on breathing through the movement. Why do you forget that? We are human. We have bad days that does not define our process or what we are doing. When you experience this th

You Are The Common Denominator

Image
Hi There  Unfortunately we are the the common denominator in ALL our circumstances, so usually the blame moves to us. A better way to say this is that we internalise it like it is our fault. Disclaimer: not everyone does, we do get blamers that are never at fault and then we get the total opposites that no matter what they take blame; then there ate the oblivious one who just don't get any if; lastly there are those in all the groups that do not have the emotional maturity to know what they are feeling and how it affects them and others. That said we have the power to change all of it. Usually we build our own obstacles around us, not our circumstances. Yes, they play a huge role in our lives and how we perceive everything, but we can choose to bend to our surroundings or bend our mind to change how it affects us.  If your circumstances are confining you do not add to it. Free your mind and start focusing within you and make that change happen. Life our life. Make that decision

Saorsa- Finding Freedom

Image
Hi There  Sorry for my disappearance. My laptop got stolen 😢😓😟And we all know the headache that comes with. Real life drama that looks and reads so easy in stories but in real life they suck and take time!!!! Getting Personal... This is a very exciting time for me and #NeverStopMovng!!! It is a huge step forward for us. I am starting to give Pilates for pregnant women and I got a premises for this purpose! And you know what all this was clouded by the burglary. I realized that I allowed them to steal my freedom as well.  We do this when we compare our goals, situations and lives with others. We are in control of how we act. What we allow to affect us and how much. Do not let others take away your saorsa. Be saorsa!!  Breath and enjoy the life you have.We only get one!! Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

Rolling With The Punches Just Got Real

Image
Hi There  Sometimes things do not go as planned. In fact they go way, way wrong. As a Sport Scientist I see this alot in the sporting environment. We train towards a goal/tournament and we lose due to a technicality or because of bad behaviour. What we need to understand is that there is so much factors that influence our performance. Most if not all to a degree we have no control over them.  This is why training for all of them is impossible but necessary. All the factors should be brought into training. That is why teams has game plan sessions and strategy planning. Because we need to prepare for the unexpected and unforeseen if possible.  The bad part is even if we train for the unsuspected we still have to deal with the technicalities and roll with the punches. As athletes we can not get hung up on the coach/Referee/officials. We still need to perform under scrutiny. We need to build up resilience and not let anything impact their performance.  Resilience is one thing that

Sometimes Evolving/Growing Means We Need To Let Go...

Image
Hi There For us to grow or evolve we need to let go of something and life has it, it is usually something we find comfort in or hold dear. It isn't something easy. Maybe simple but not easy.  For us to become healthy we need to give up bad habits. Life is all about give and take. What we give up and what we take up can literally change our lives for good or bad. Sometimes we feel like letting go might be the end, but it can also be the best starting point for your next step forward. Evolving is tough, but something we can not run away from. We can choose to go a long or get dragged along or worse stuck with no growth whatsoever!! I had to let go of something and I am still struggling with it, but to grow and evolve I need to... Letting go is not always the end It is a start to a new begining     Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

Balance...

Hi There  Why is balance so hard?  As a Sport scientist, I think of balance as an physical act. Maybe an unconscious physical act. BUT EVERYTHING is a balancing act. Living a healthy style means a balanced lifestyle. Balanced in all aspect of human life. Our diet, work schedule, day to day, movement, etc... Why do we forget this? Why do we just focus on our diet and physicality when it comes to getting or being healthy?  No... Heath and being healthy means to be BALANCED in EVERY aspect of LIVING... Thus it is a journey. Something we work on every single day. Because we are MORE than the sum of our PARTS... We are more than just physical beings. To be truly healthy and balanced means mental health, emotional/spiritual health, social health  are ALL good and on the same level. This is hard to achieve because we CANNOT control all the aspects of our being and let's be honest life plays a role too... BUT... I want to start thinking and working on a BALANCED HEALTHY lifestyle. Start lo

What Happened !!

Image
H i There  It feels totally unreal. I don't know what to say or even where to start. I had a plan. I wanted to build my blog and post regularly. I planned out my posts. I wrote them and scheduled them to go out automatically. I was so proud of how I started 2020 in a positive and with an actual path planned out. I NEVER do that. Usually the intent is there but never much action. This time there were both!!  WHAT HAPPENED.... Corona Virus... HAPPENED Novel - Corona Virus 19... HAPPENED Covid- 19... HAPPENED Covid SARS 2 ... HAPPENED Whatever you want to call it... IT HAPPENED  The whole world went on LOCK-DOWN.It is a world event that we will tell our kids about... The Pandemic that changed the world. That we lived through it.  With this I want to stay positive and I want to encourage you to take this time, this event, to remember what freedom means to us as beings and that our health should be the biggest and  most important investment you have to make! Keep Moving!! Jean-Marie'

Week 12 #2020 Ohhhhh I want to DANCE with somebody!!

Image
Hi There Now this is where the fun starts. The real #Realization of changing how we look at EVERYTHING HEALTH. This is also the part I love. Because it is so much more than just being conscious of our sleep, diet and exercise. I also believe this is why we fail, because it starts as a to-do list. That is not how a healthy lifestyle works. Or even being happy works. It is a state of being. And that is what we are trying to achieve not the to-do list to get there!! Don't get me wrong; diet and sleep etc. are important and should be controlled but it is not the be-all of being healthy. If you follow this blog or my personal blog  you would know that I believe it is a journey to become and stay healthy.  This week I want you to DANCE as your "cardio" session. I want you to be creative. Grab your kids and make memories. Dance and jump with them on your favorite song and play it loud! Laugh at your own or their moves! Show them that Mom and Dad can have fun! Play one song, pl

Week 4 #2020Think Big, Start Small

Image
Hi There  What we do today has an impact in our future. We all know this. We remember this with the "big" things; but it is also true for all the little/small things we do. Like drinking more water, eating better, moving more than usual. It is in the small changes that we make where our big successes comes from. When we think big it overwhelms us, but that is the big picture not the process or journey towards our success. When we reach success; people don't ask about how you got there. You are just seen as successful. But there is ALWAYS a path ,Journey ,Process that was followed and it is NEVER easy or WITHOUT STRUGGLE, FAILURE PLATO's Etc. This Journey is for you and what you can achieve being balanced and healthy throughout your life.  Always keep the big picture in mind;but focus on the process, the journey.  Start Analyzing the small things you do that prevents success? How can you change it? What Small thing can you do to make a big impact on your tomorrow an

Mucle Of The Week.... Buccinator

Image
Hi There This week's muscle is the Buccinator... It makes me think of the Terminator.... Although it is not pronounced like it.  But none the less sounds awesome!! It also helps me remember where the Buccinator is...Because the terminator loses his face. It is in the face where our cheeks are. In Fact it is the muscle underneath our cheeks! It helps us chew and keeps the cheeks in place. The Buccinator is also one of the  the muscle we learn to control at a very young age, because of it's function. It helps us chew and Suck when we are infants. this muscle helps us whissle as well Buccinator . Follow the link to see video of the buccinator Common Injuries to this muscle is usually dentures that are not fitted correctly or direct trauma to the cheek. I'll be back... Keep Moving!!

Muscle Of The Week... Brachioradialis

Image
Hi There We are at it again. We are sill in the arm!. This week's Muscle is the Brachioradialis. So Bharchi tells us where we are.. The arm, but I just want to add some bone structure!! The word Radius is also found in this week's muscle. This tells us that it the muscle is on the side of the arm where the radius bone is. An extra tip it is on the side of your thumb!Easy way to remember... Your thumbs can draw a circle and a circles has a radius!!   Brachioradialis      Click the link above for the video!  Common Injuries : Click the link for the article of common injuries  Tennis Elbow is a common injury for this muscle. It occurs by overuse. Doing repetitive movements .Weightlifetters also injure this muscle but poor technique or too much too soon  Please follow the links. Keep Moving until next time 👋

Muscle Of The Week... Brachialis

Image
Hi There I just want to take a step back and review what we have learnt so far. First the terminology and then the muscles we have discussed. Remember we just want to know where our muscles are and what function in our movement they play.  Terminology *Abduction/ Abduct- Movement away from the midline of the body  *Proximal- Closest point to the joint *Distal- Furthest point to the joint  *Brevis- Short  *Longus- Long *Inferior- Lower part  *Superior- Upper part  *Flexion- Minimising the angle of the joint  *Adduction- Movement towards the midline of the body  *Brachi- Arm Muscles we have done *Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Foot  *Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Hand *Abductor Hallucis  *Abductor Pollicis Brevis *Abductor Pollicis Longus   *Adductor Brevis *Adductor Hallucis *Adductor Longus *Adductor Magnus *Adductor Pollicis *Anconeus *Articularis Cubiti *Articularis Genu *Auricularis *Biceps Brachii *Biceps Femoris

Muscle Of The Week... Biceps Femoris

Image
Hi There This week's muscle is part of the Hammy Group.Affectionately known as the Hammys. But let me be clear. The Hammys are THREE SEPARATE muscles of which one is this week's muscle... The Biceps Femoris.By the name we know it has two "heads" or origins like last week's muscle: The Biceps Brachii  . I have to make a confession...I confused the Biceps Femoris with the Rectus Femoris; which is actually part of the Quads🙈🙊. That is why I love this series. It is a great way to review my anatomy. In a way that does not feel like studying. I mean I used to hate to study Anatomy... Especially because to understand it the best you also need to understand a part of physiology. But you have to study this in parts not as a whole.Which makes it hard, because I am a the whole picture person... Anyway, in my line of work we need to know our Anatomy and the functions there of; but the way we move and how we have adapted causes that some muscle are brought to the fore mo

Muscle Of The Week... Aryepiglotticus

Image
Hi There The body is amazing and very complex. If you have been following this series you can see that we truly are more then the sum of our parts, and we do have a lot of parts!! We are almost done with all the "A" muscles!! This week's muscle is another tough one. But before we go on this muscle is one of the muscles that helps us swallow. So it is located in our throats. On a side note: I love that this brings us back to how we are put together to survive and for me personally we are more than just muscle moving but we are also moving too  Aryepiglotticus Follow link for a video   for the anatomy of the larynx .  Please follow the links to see my sources. I want to give credit to all of them. Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

Muscle Of The Week... Articularis Genu

Image
Hi There This week's muscle is a tough one again... It is so small but not less important. It is a stabilizing muscle so that is it's function. It is also situated in the knee. I can not add to this, But we have learned that the knee is a complicated joint with lots of working parts! Another Word we can add to our medical vocabulary ... Genu- which means Knee Articularis Genu  Also I want to give an idea of where the muscle is and what it's functions are. I understand not everybody wants to know anatomy and such, but my goal is not to teach you anatomy but just provide a bit more information of the muscles.  Thank You  Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

Muscle Of The Week... Adductor Hallucis

Image
Hi There We are back at it!! This week we add the "Hallucis" to our terminology..  Terminology  We have learnt the following  *Abduction/ Abduct *Proximal *Distal *Brevis *Longus *Inferior *Flexion *Adduction And this week we add... Hallucis which means.  "of the big toe" Muscles we have done *Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Foot  *Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Hand *Abductor Hallucis  *Abductor Pollicis Brevis *Abductor Pollicis Longus   All the above muscles main function is Abduction.  *Adductor Brevis  This is the first muscle we have dealt with, which main function is adductor.  Now on to this week's Muscle Adductor Hallucis Origin: Base of the second metatarsal bone, Base of third metatarsal bone, Base of the fourth   metatarsal bone, ligaments of metatarsophalangeal joints 3 - 5 . Insertion: Base of proximal phalanx of the foot.  The function of Adductor Hallucis:  Adduction of big toe Flexion of the metatarsophalangeal

Muscle Of The Week... Abductor Pollicis Longus

Image
Hi There We are busy with all the ABductor muscles. This means muscles that pulls movement away from the mid line of the body! Abduct- The smart way to clarify any movement that is done away from the mid line of the body or extremity. Easy way to remember is that aliens abduct humans FROM earth TO space. So the movement we are carrying out moves away FROM the midline TO where the movement takes place.  I also think of a Jumping Jack to explain this movement. As we jump out with out legs and swing arm open and over we are abducting the legs and arms. Proximal means  nearest point the joint  Distal means furthers point from the joint This week we add Brevis to the list of descriptive words in anatomy. Brevis is the Latin word that means "short" and this brings us to Longus, which ; you've guessed it..."long". Our list so far: Abduction,Proximal,Distal,Brevis...and Longus!!  Remember professionals need a language that can be understood internationall

Muscles Of The Week... Rhomboids

Image
Hi There I am starting a new series. I want people to learn more about the body and how it works. I talk about the brain and body needing to learn to talk to one another. They need to speak the same language. During my time with clients and athletes I have realized that most of them have little to none body awareness.  Now let me be clear. You do not need to understand or have in- depth knowledge to have good body awareness, but it helps tremendously when you at least know where the muscle is and how it works.  So during this series I am going to try and keep it simple. I will provide you with what I deem credible sources that I use/d during my studies and ongoing quest to fully understand movement. Muscles Of The Week... Rhomboids. These two muscles are not fully responsible for our posture but play a big role in it.If we do not activate them we see the rounded back posture. This is only one possibility of the rounded back postures, there are many possibilities and dysfunctions that ca
