Muscle Of the Week... Review

Image
Hi There  I want to do a review of the muscles we have done! We have done 20 so far!! Remember we are just trying to gain more insight on where the muscles are and get an idea of the functions it has. We are not Anatomy students, just learning about our bodies!! Here is the muscles we have done and what we learnt on our way  A Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Foot Here we learnt that ABductor muscles functions take the movement away from the body  Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Hand Digiti means digit  Abductor Hallucis  Hallucis means Big Toe Abductor Pollicis Brevis Pollicus means Thumb  Brevis means Short Abductor Pollicis Longus  Longus means Long  Adductor Brevis Adductor means the functions of these muscles takes the movement toward the body  Adductor Hallucis Adductor Longus  Adductor Magnus Magnus means great  Adductor Pollicis  Anconeus  Articularis Cubiti Some textbook consider this muscle as part of the Biceps Brachi  Artic

Mucle Of The Week.... Buccinator

Image
Hi There This week's muscle is the Buccinator... It makes me think of the Terminator.... Although it is not pronounced like it.  But none the less sounds awesome!! It also helps me remember where the Buccinator is...Because the terminator loses his face. It is in the face where our cheeks are. In Fact it is the muscle underneath our cheeks! It helps us chew and keeps the cheeks in place. The Buccinator is also one of the  the muscle we learn to control at a very young age, because of it's function. It helps us chew and Suck when we are infants. this muscle helps us whissle as well Buccinator . Follow the link to see video of the buccinator Common Injuries to this muscle is usually dentures that are not fitted correctly or direct trauma to the cheek. I'll be back... Keep Moving!!

Chooseday

Image
Hi There It is Chooseday Tuesday time. The second instalment! Today we will talk about choosing the hard way or the smart way. Please feel free to also add to discussion by commenting below!  Hard  What is the hard way? What is considered hard? I mean what is hard for one person might not be for another. But for the purpose of this piece let us define "hard" as an abstract concept as it is.  Smart  Again we have an abstract concept. But I do believe that this has more of consistent meaning. What one sees as smart mostly means the same thing. Let's just say that it has to have ingenuity to be considered smart.    Now on to our tasks of deciding which is better. Can we do both? Like in last week? Can you do it the hard and smart way?  To be truly honest some things are both!  This was put before me by my Mentor. There is always a hard or smart way. The smart way may be hard, but the hard way is never smart.  Before I make a decision I always ask myself:&qu

Muscle Of The Week... Biceps Femoris

Image
Hi There This week's muscle is part of the Hammy Group.Affectionately known as the Hammys. But let me be clear. The Hammys are THREE SEPARATE muscles of which one is this week's muscle... The Biceps Femoris.By the name we know it has two "heads" or origins like last week's muscle: The Biceps Brachii  . I have to make a confession...I confused the Biceps Femoris with the Rectus Femoris; which is actually part of the Quads🙈🙊. That is why I love this series. It is a great way to review my anatomy. In a way that does not feel like studying. I mean I used to hate to study Anatomy... Especially because to understand it the best you also need to understand a part of physiology. But you have to study this in parts not as a whole.Which makes it hard, because I am a the whole picture person... Anyway, in my line of work we need to know our Anatomy and the functions there of; but the way we move and how we have adapted causes that some muscle are brought to the fore mo

Muscle Of The Week...Auricularis

Image
Hi There TIs week's muscles are a group of facial muscles. They are called Auricularis Anterior Auricularis Posterior and Auricularis Superior. They are placed under the Temporal Muscle.  Now remember the goal here is to know where and what the muscle does not to become an anatomy expert. This is also our last muscle starting with A!!! Here is a quick list of the muscles we have doone! Abductor digiti minimi of the Foot  Abductor digiti minimi of the Hand Abductor hallucis Abductor pollicis brevis  Abductor pollicis longus Adductor brevis Adductor hallucis Adductor longus Adductor magnus Adductor pollicis Anconeus Articularis cubiti Articularis genu Aryepiglotticus ...Auricularis this week's Muscle!! Quick Question! Which of the listed is attached on the Femur (Thigh Bone) and is the largest muscle of this group? Please leave your answer in the comments below!! Auricularis These muscles helps with our facial expressions! There are

Muscle Of The Week... Anconeus

Image
Hi There Since last week's muscle was the last of the adductor name groups. I think a quick recap of what we have learnt thus far. Terminology *Abduction/ Abduct *Proximal *Distal *Brevis *Longus *Inferior *Flexion *Adduction Muscles we have done *Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Foot  *Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Hand *Abductor Hallucis  *Abductor Pollicis Brevis *Abductor Pollicis Longus   *Adductor Brevis *Adductor Hallucis *Adductor Longus *Adductor Magnus *Adductor Pollicis Muscles Of The Week... Anconeus. KenHub explains the Anconeus as follows ": The Anconeus muscle is a small, triangular muscle located at the elbow. It originates at the dorsal (back) side of the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and inserts at the olecranon of the ulna. The Anconeus lies superficially and can be palpated at the dorsal, lateral side of the forearm near the elbow. The Anconeus contraction leads to extension of the forearm,

The Muscle Of The Week...Adductor Magnus

Image
Hi There I am so excited about this week's muscle!! Why, because I believe it is one of the most injury prone muscles that we underestimate! I also believe that we can lessen this "proneness to injury" by stretching this group, namely: Adductor Brevis, Adductor Longest and this week's Adductor Magnus . You see when we move these muscles,it is usually one direction within a joint that can and should be able to move multi- directional. Think about. The hip joInt is multi- directional, but when do we actually open the joint? We walk, run and cycle in one direction. it is rarely where we open the joint, when we do it is usually done quick and the groin gets injured. Thus I believe stretching this group should be implemented in every program for absolutely everybody.   Any Questions?  Adductor Magnus Origin: Ramus of the Ischium, Inferior Pubic Ramus, Tuberosity of the Ischium  . Insertion: Linea Aspera, Adductor Tubercle.  The function of Adducto

Muscle Of The Week... Abductor Pollicis Brevis

Image
Hi There We are busy with all the ABductor muscles. This means muscles that pulls movement away from the mid line of the body! Abduct- The smart way to clarify any movement that is done away from the mid line of the body or extremity. Easy way to remember is that aliens abduct humans FROM earth TO space. So the movement we are carrying out moves away FROM the midline TO where the movement takes place.  I also think of a Jumping Jack to explain this movement. As we jump out with out legs and swing arm open and over we are abducting the legs and arms. Proximal means  nearest point the joint  Distal means furthers point from the joint Abductor Pollicis Brevis KenHub explains the Abductor Pollicis Brevis as follows ":This muscle arises from the tubercles of the scaphoid and trapezium, and from the flexor retinaculum. Its short tendon courses to the base of the proximal phalanx and the dorsal aponeurosis of the thumb via the radial sesamoid bone. The abductor pollicis brevis

Muscle Of The Week... Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Foot

Hi There I want to apologize for missing last week's Muscle Of The Week (again...), but we have a lot of muscles to cover and I would like to go through all of them! This is an overwhelming ask!! We have so many muscles and ALL of them play a role in our movement! I have decided that working alphabetically might be a better way of navigating the muscles! For the brain and body to talk to one another. They need to speak the same language.  For this to happen we need to be conscious  of where the movement originates and what needs to be done. During my time with clients and athletes I have realized that most of them have little to none body awareness.  Now let me be clear. You do not need to understand or have in- depth knowledge to have good body awareness, but it helps tremendously when you at least know where the muscle is and how it works.  So during this series I am going to try and keep it simple. I will provide you with what I deem credible sources that I use/d during my stud

A Never Ending... Journey

Image
Hi There  This is the time of the year I love to hate. Everyone is restless and tired at the same time. They want the big holiday, but then realize how much still needs to be done. It is also the time that everybody wants the bikini body for December. Problem is that a summer body is made in the winter. There really is no quick fix to being healthy, feeling and looking good. It is a process. Ironically it never stops! We go on a journey with our being and we discover new elements of ourselves. It is a never ending journey....  Enjoy your Monday and let us move through this week!! Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋
