Muscle Of The Week... Brachialis

Image
Hi There I just want to take a step back and review what we have learnt so far. First the terminology and then the muscles we have discussed. Remember we just want to know where our muscles are and what function in our movement they play.  Terminology *Abduction/ Abduct- Movement away from the midline of the body  *Proximal- Closest point to the joint *Distal- Furthest point to the joint  *Brevis- Short  *Longus- Long *Inferior- Lower part  *Superior- Upper part  *Flexion- Minimising the angle of the joint  *Adduction- Movement towards the midline of the body  *Brachi- Arm Muscles we have done *Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Foot  *Abductor Digiti Minimi of the Hand *Abductor Hallucis  *Abductor Pollicis Brevis *Abductor Pollicis Longus   *Adductor Brevis *Adductor Hallucis *Adductor Longus *Adductor Magnus *Adductor Pollicis *Anconeus *Articularis Cubiti *Articularis Genu *Auricularis *Biceps Brachii *Biceps Femoris

It's...CHOOSEday!!!!!

Image
Hi There It is Chooseday Tuesday time! This time it is about choosing You or Others... For You or For Others!  Again we are focusing on abstract concepts. Which I love!!! I love it because it makes you think why you believe or behave the way you do!. Please feel free to also add to discussion by commenting below!  Firstly we need to decide what each of these concepts mean. What does for me mean? When do you do things for yourself purely for you. For me? What does for others mean? When and what do you do others? What makes you feel good? Doing things for others or yourself?  If you asked me this question a few months ago my answer would have been totally different. I would have said that you should do everything for others! They make you feel good. They validate you. Now I want to slap myself that I ever thought that!! I validate myself, I make myself feel good!! Not others!.  I believe that again do BOTH!!! Do things for yourself to grow and be healthy. If it needs be put yourself

Muscle Of The Week... Biceps Femoris

Image
Hi There This week's muscle is part of the Hammy Group.Affectionately known as the Hammys. But let me be clear. The Hammys are THREE SEPARATE muscles of which one is this week's muscle... The Biceps Femoris.By the name we know it has two "heads" or origins like last week's muscle: The Biceps Brachii  . I have to make a confession...I confused the Biceps Femoris with the Rectus Femoris; which is actually part of the Quads🙈🙊. That is why I love this series. It is a great way to review my anatomy. In a way that does not feel like studying. I mean I used to hate to study Anatomy... Especially because to understand it the best you also need to understand a part of physiology. But you have to study this in parts not as a whole.Which makes it hard, because I am a the whole picture person... Anyway, in my line of work we need to know our Anatomy and the functions there of; but the way we move and how we have adapted causes that some muscle are brought to the fore mo

Muscle Of The Week... Biceps Brachii

Image
Hi There Finally we have a muscle that most people have heard of and have an idea of where it is located!!! It is the muscle we use to show people our strength!💪Especially when we are young! Why, I am not sure. I believe it is because we do not usually have a lot of fat covering the muscle so it is easy to feel and see. The perception then is if it can be felt and see one is strong or lean.  I am excited to talk about a more "well-known" muscle!!! The Biceps Brachii has two heads, hence the name. It has two origin points.  Biceps Brachii   I have found a beautiful video explaining the muscle please click here to see it.  Common Injuries  Because of it where the Biceps Brachii has two origins and both pulls the arm in different ways/directions. It can play a role in rotator cuff injuries. These injuries can be any restriction the the 360° movement of the shoulder. It also can be any of the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint.  Another common Injury can be Bicep

Muscle Of The Week...Auricularis

Image
Hi There TIs week's muscles are a group of facial muscles. They are called Auricularis Anterior Auricularis Posterior and Auricularis Superior. They are placed under the Temporal Muscle.  Now remember the goal here is to know where and what the muscle does not to become an anatomy expert. This is also our last muscle starting with A!!! Here is a quick list of the muscles we have doone! Abductor digiti minimi of the Foot  Abductor digiti minimi of the Hand Abductor hallucis Abductor pollicis brevis  Abductor pollicis longus Adductor brevis Adductor hallucis Adductor longus Adductor magnus Adductor pollicis Anconeus Articularis cubiti Articularis genu Aryepiglotticus ...Auricularis this week's Muscle!! Quick Question! Which of the listed is attached on the Femur (Thigh Bone) and is the largest muscle of this group? Please leave your answer in the comments below!! Auricularis These muscles helps with our facial expressions! There are

Muscle Of The Week... Aryepiglotticus

Image
Hi There The body is amazing and very complex. If you have been following this series you can see that we truly are more then the sum of our parts, and we do have a lot of parts!! We are almost done with all the "A" muscles!! This week's muscle is another tough one. But before we go on this muscle is one of the muscles that helps us swallow. So it is located in our throats. On a side note: I love that this brings us back to how we are put together to survive and for me personally we are more than just muscle moving but we are also moving too  Aryepiglotticus Follow link for a video   for the anatomy of the larynx .  Please follow the links to see my sources. I want to give credit to all of them. Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

Muscle Of The Week... Articularis Genu

Image
Hi There This week's muscle is a tough one again... It is so small but not less important. It is a stabilizing muscle so that is it's function. It is also situated in the knee. I can not add to this, But we have learned that the knee is a complicated joint with lots of working parts! Another Word we can add to our medical vocabulary ... Genu- which means Knee Articularis Genu  Also I want to give an idea of where the muscle is and what it's functions are. I understand not everybody wants to know anatomy and such, but my goal is not to teach you anatomy but just provide a bit more information of the muscles.  Thank You  Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

Muscle Of The Week... Adductor Pollicis

Image
Hi There How are you experiencing this series? I must say I am actually enjoying this. It is almost like revising my university anatomy, only this time with less stress. I believe this is why I am having so much fun with this series. I am even incorporating The Muscle Of The Week in my programmes I design for my clients and athletes!! I hope you are learning more about the physical side you are constructed of. I am starting another series on my FaceBook Group #NeverStopMoving Q & A WEDNESDAY. Where YOU can ask me anything that has to do with movement and my personal blog!   On to this week's muscle... Adductor Pollicis This is the last muscle's name that start with "adductor". This also tells us that it is the muscle's main but NOT only function. Also by seeing the name it should tells us where the muscle is... Pollicis meaning Pollex which is thumb in latin. So we are talking about a muscle that adducts the thumb. Remember when talking about "car

Muscle Of The Week... Abductor Pollicis Longus

Image
Hi There We are busy with all the ABductor muscles. This means muscles that pulls movement away from the mid line of the body! Abduct- The smart way to clarify any movement that is done away from the mid line of the body or extremity. Easy way to remember is that aliens abduct humans FROM earth TO space. So the movement we are carrying out moves away FROM the midline TO where the movement takes place.  I also think of a Jumping Jack to explain this movement. As we jump out with out legs and swing arm open and over we are abducting the legs and arms. Proximal means  nearest point the joint  Distal means furthers point from the joint This week we add Brevis to the list of descriptive words in anatomy. Brevis is the Latin word that means "short" and this brings us to Longus, which ; you've guessed it..."long". Our list so far: Abduction,Proximal,Distal,Brevis...and Longus!!  Remember professionals need a language that can be understood internationall

Sport Science Testing

Image
Hi There  We are undergoing testing these upcoming weeks. This is the time I love to hate. I still love what I do, but the athletes are angsty about how they perform and what the results would mean for them and the team. The training also get influenced by this, because some try and gain all the components of fitness in that one single session before we test the next day!!  For me personally It means setting up the test and a whole lot of data that needs to be taken, processed, analyzed and reported. In other words a lot of paper work!!!! This is the part I don't like, but is the fundamental part I need to design programmes that really make a difference in my athletes' training. This is also how I not only evaluate them but also my quality of work. So the Pressure is on!! Testing is so important, because the feedback tells us where the programs weakness as well as strength lies and we as supporting staff can brainstorm to produce the best training strategy for our athlete

You Can Not Change What You Do Not Know

Image
Hi There  To make a change we need to be be conscious of what you need to change. You can not change what you don't know.  So taking that first step in admitting that a change is needed is a very big step towards the change.  Another thing we need to keep in mind is that change is a process. EVERYTHING is a PROCESS. Change takes time and follows a specific process.  Making small changes and building on them is the best way to change. It doesn't just happen. So let us become conscious and make a change by starting small and manageable, building on your successes.   Consciousness is key. Have a great weekend!! Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

The Lie We Tell Ourselves

Image
Hi There  The biggest lie we tell ourselves and everyone who asks is.... I HATE EXERCISE... Yes you read correctly. It is a lie you tell everyone and you begin to believe it. Just hear me out. Firstly, usually you do it wrong... Read my last  blog on this matter. (Click this link)  ... and sometimes injure ourselves or over do it to the point that we do not want to go through the PAIN again... not the exercise... the PAIN.  Secondly, how do we know we are getting old or unfit? Isn't funny that we do not always realise or rather it takes us way longer to realise we are fitter than were but it takes us an instant to realise we are losing it? We only think of "exercise" when we realise we are moving harder or becoming tired more often. It is not the action of movement we hate it is the reaction from it because we usually do it wrong. We as human beings love to move. I believe it is a blessing, because we are the only species that do movement consciously. We literally

Where it begins

Image
HI There This is a special blog. One of my clients that read my blogs asked me where my fascination with movement lies. I always seem to talk about movement in the present and future and not so much from where it begins. I usually only address it as Life Is Movement. It is one of the 8 characteristics of life.  So this blog is dedicated to where movement begins. Why my world revolves around it. For conception to take place we need the sperm to move to the ovum. From there it needs to enter (through movement) the ovum for conception to take place. I am not going to go to deep in the biology and physiology of this process but basically a lot movement takes place in the whole process. Cells divide and multiply and a fetus is formed. We even move in the womb. We never stop moving from the beginning and it took movement for us to exist.  Through growth (movement in a different form) we expand our knowledge, skills and experiences through movement. Movement dictates our destinies. When

Movement should be apart of your daily routine

Image
Hi There  We are all busy and have a lot on our plates, but I think it is time to look at our routines. Are we being busy or productive? Because to be honest it is easy to be busy, but it is hard being productive. Busy can be tiring and you never get anything done. Being productive means to complete your goal.  Think about it productive people always seem to have so much free time, they are never stress out all the time! Incorporating movement into your day helps burn off the stress and gives you more energy and blood flowing through the brain to focus on being productive!! As a mind shift I also recommend that we all stop saying we are busy, but that we start being productive and creative with our time!  Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

It Really Is All In Your Mind!😏

Image
Hi There I hope you took my advice and made some awesome stories this weekend; or at least renewed you inner power by resting etc. I always go on about the mind. We are more than the sum of our parts (My university professors should be so proud!) We are a whole. Meaning we can not fix one part and then we are all right. The parts function together. That is why I keep on emphasizing that we should see health and fitness the same why. We need to involve all the parts to succeed. The most important part is the BRAIN. It controls everything. Thus changing How we think and see health, fitness etc. We need to create a new "plot twist" to our fitness/ movement regime. We can change how we think about it and make it fun. Have fun with it.We are creative beings. It just takes practice.  Good Luck with creating new Plot twists this week😉 ! Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

It's Friday!! Allow Yourself To Rest

Image
Hi There  It's FRIDAY!!! I want to encourage you to rest on weekends! To balance out your week. Catch up on social activities (not media) and unwind! Again this is easier said than done... Sometimes I feel like weekends are busier than our weekday's activities!! We need balance in our lives. We all know this. You need to allow yourself to rest and even out your activities of the week. It is important to unwind and de-stress. Make some awesome memories with the fam and friends. Just be for a few hours and you will be amazed how this will increase your productivity during the week. Take care of yourself and be an example to the ones around you!! Go Make Awesome Stories!    Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

Movement should bring us joy 😊

Image
Hi There After a bit of thought I think I want to share my belief of movement or exercise. I believe that we are all different and that we all have different goals, but that we all need to MOVE. How we move can and probably are very different. That is amazing. It amazes me, it is absolutely awesome. I believe that movement brings us joy. That it physically makes us strong and confident. The problem is we don't move effectively and most of us do not find joy in movement and this saddens me deeply.   Like I said before it is small changes that can help us find joy in movement!    Keep Moving until ne xt time 👋

Increased Awesomeness

Image
Hi There  There are days where you feel that you just can't keep up and you do not want to keep moving... These are the days we need to just stick with it... We can not give up. Remember as I mentioned before: To start is always the hardest step to take. When we are busy or "in it" it is easier to just carry on, push through, keep moving. The best part about it; is that you get stronger. It gets easier to carry on. This is the secret. There is no easy way, quick fix, no magic potion. You need to work for it. It is a journey that never ends, but has the potential to create the BEST YOU!!! We just need to think differently about movement and work it to our benefit. We were made to move. We find joy in movement. We just lost the ability to read our bodies and move it to our benefit and goals.  Sooo... When we experience these days... Just carry on and work on your increased awesomeness by doing it for yourself. Realize you are getting stronger!! Keep Moving until ne
